Summary
Overview
Descript’s pitch is “editing as easy as editing text,” and it fits anyone who records people talking: interviews, webinars, founder updates, podcasts. You fix the transcript and the video follows.
Watch the credits and media-hour limits on each plan; most of the AI features draw from them.
Who it fits
Descript suits people who think in sentences rather than clips. You record or upload talking-head footage, let it transcribe, then cut the video by deleting words. The strongest matches are interviews, podcasts, webinars and founder updates. It is better suited to talk-driven edits than to motion-graphics-heavy or cinematic ones, and it is a subscription rather than a one-time purchase.
What the plans include
On Descript’s pricing page, the Free plan has 60 media minutes a month and 720p export, and its FAQ says no credit card is needed. Hobbyist ($16 a month billed annually, $24 monthly) adds 10 media hours, 400 AI credits and 1080p without a watermark. Creator ($24 annual, $35 monthly) moves to 30 media hours, 800 AI credits and 4K. Business ($50 annual, $65 monthly) adds 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, Brand Studio, and translation and dubbing in 30+ languages. Prices are per person.
Limits and alternatives
Media hours and AI credits are capped on every plan, so heavy use of the AI features can mean top-ups or a higher tier, and per-person pricing grows with team size. Descript lists timeline export to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, Logic and Audition, so you can finish elsewhere. Clueso is aimed at product demos and how-to videos, Riverside at recording podcasts and interviews, and CapCut is a template-driven editor that is free to start.
